Synopsis: Lana's "million-dollar" Edith Head wardrobe highlights this tale of the idle rich and how far they will go just to get a little satisfaction.

My Review: If you can look past Lana's brightly colored beach wear, Hugh O'Brian's impersonation of a bathing suit clad Dean Martin/Larry from Three's Company beach bum (Get Dressed Huey!), the poor editing and the uncomfortable stiffness of Cliff Robertson and Stefanie Powers in their scenes together, you will find that underneath it all, this is a very sad movie. Lana and Cliff Robertson portray "Kit" and Pete Jordon, a married couple that are so disillusioned with one another (due in part to Kit's years of infidelity) that they only thing that they have in common is their love of alcohol and the opposite sex. Lana's character of Kit is so desperately unhappy that as the film progresses and Pete ultimately falls into the arms of another woman and she starts to fall apart, you really feel for this girl. The only thing that she had to hang onto was her husband and now that he has left her for someone else she has nothing. Lana's "breakdown" scene is very effective and will have you in tears.

Something curious that I picked up on: All of Lana's close up shots are in soft focus and you can barely see her face. "Oh she's just getting older" you may say, but that is not the case. In 1966's Madame X, made a year later, her close up shots are clear and normal, although she is indeed a year older. The only thing that I can think of is that Lana herself was nervous that there would be too much light on her face during her scenes at the beach, but then again, the same soft-focused lighting is used during her scenes inside of the house...

Puzzling...
